Guests Who Have Stayed

Unfiltered words from those who've stayed.

We woke up to clouds drifting past the bedroom window, had breakfast on the terrace, and were swimming in the Pacific by noon. I've traveled all over Central America and never found anything like this balance.

La Colina was absolutely perfect for our honeymoon. Total privacy, the most attentive hosts I've ever encountered, and the mountain setting at dusk was something we'll carry with us forever.

The guided Chirripó hike in the morning and a sunset dinner on the coast the same evening — our concierge made it feel effortless. The breakfast prepared in our casita every morning was a ritual we didn't want to give up.

The Southern Zone Way

Where Living Well Isn't a Retreat. It's Just Life.

Costa Rica is home to one of the world's five Blue Zones — places where people live longer, more fully, and with deeper purpose. What makes it remarkable isn't a postcode. It's a way of living. The Southern Zone carries those same principles honestly: food grown from volcanic soil, unhurried days shaped around you, evenings that slow down, and a community that knows your name.

The Soil

Volcanic earth at 1,000 metres. A year-round growing season. Everything in your casita — the coffee, the water, the apothecary on your shelf — came from this specific land. No supply chains. No strangers' hands.

The Pace

72°F year-round. No agenda unless you want one. Mornings that begin with coffee on a mountain terrace and end wherever the day takes you — coast, forest, or right here. No one hurrying you anywhere.

The Connection

Minutes from San Isidro's Saturday farmers market and the genuine life of the Southern Zone — not a gated island, not a managed enclave. Your hosts are the owners. This is their farm. You are their guests.

Why the Southern Zone

Elevation Without Compromise

Most mountain retreats force a choice: remote highlands or the coast. At 1,000 metres in the Southern Zone, Hacienda La Palma offers both — every single day.

Feature Remote Mountain Resorts Hacienda La Palma
Distance to Beach 2.5+ Hours 35 Minutes
Climate Often Cold / Damp Perfect Spring (72°F)
Local Culture Isolated Enclave Minutes to San Isidro
Scale & Privacy Vast & Institutional Intimate & Bespoke
Accessibility Difficult Roads Seamless & Scenic
Who You'll Meet A Hired Manager The Owners — Who Built This Place
What's Included Room, Nothing More Breakfast, Chauffeur (5+ nights), Farm Coffee, Spring Water, Concierge

35 Minutes to the Pacific

Most high-altitude resorts are a half-day journey from the coast. Wake in cool mountain air and swim in the 85°F Pacific before lunch—then return for a fireside dinner in the highlands.

The Sweet-Spot Elevation

At 1,000m we sit in the Eternal Spring zone—72°F days, cool nights, no AC needed. The green mist of Chirripó without the chill of the high peaks.

Authentic Connection

Minutes from San Isidro del General, guests walk the famous Feria farmers market, taste local coffee roasters, and experience the genuine Southern Zone—not a gated island.

Intimate, Not Institutional

20 suites. One concierge team. You're not a room number here—you are the master of the Hacienda. We pivot instantly, whether it's a dawn hike or a last-minute sunset dinner on the coast.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know before you reach out.

What's included in every stay?

Every stay includes: a daily traditional Tico breakfast prepared fresh in your casita each morning; estate-grown coffee and natural mineral spring water waiting on arrival; farm-crafted apothecary amenities; a welcome basket with seasonal fruit from the food forest; personalised itinerary planning; and direct access to the on-property coffee plantation. Stays of 5 nights or more also include our private 4x4 chauffeur service — airport transfers, beach days, dinners, and day trips. Shorter stays are welcome and can add chauffeur service at $150/day. No hidden extras.

Do you have a minimum stay requirement?

We recommend 5 nights or more — it's enough time to settle in, explore the coast, and actually feel the pace of this place. Stays of 5 nights or more include our private 4x4 chauffeur for airport transfers, beach days, and day trips. Shorter stays are absolutely welcome at a slightly adjusted nightly rate ($99/night supplement), and chauffeur service is available as an add-on at $150/day. We're upfront about this so there are never any surprises.

What is the private 4x4 chauffeur service?

Our private 4x4 chauffeur handles your airport transfer, Pacific beach days, restaurant dinners, and any day trips across the Southern Zone. You tell us the plan; we handle the driving. No rental car, no navigation stress, no mountain-road anxiety. It's included at no extra charge with stays of 5 nights or more. For shorter stays, chauffeur service is available at $150/day.

How far is Hacienda La Palma from the airport?

From San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), it's approximately 3.5 hours by road through Costa Rica's scenic central valley and mountain passes. For stays of 5 nights or more, your private 4x4 chauffeur handles the transfer — you land, we're there. No car hire, no navigation, no stress. Shorter-stay guests can add chauffeur service or self-drive with a 4x4.

Can I self-drive to the property?

Yes. Guests who prefer to drive themselves are welcome — but a 4x4 vehicle is required, especially for access to Hacienda La Cascada. If you're unsure whether your rental qualifies, just ask us before you book the car.

Are pets welcome?

Yes — Hacienda La Cascada is pet-friendly. Please let us know you'll be bringing a pet when you inquire so we can prepare accordingly.

What's the difference between the three stays?

Casitas are our signature two-bedroom mountain suites — ideal for couples, friends, or small families who want the full Hacienda La Palma experience. La Colina is our most private retreat, set behind its own gated entrance — perfect for honeymoons and romantic escapes. Hacienda La Cascada is a one-bedroom Tico-style countryside home for two, set beside the river with a waterfall steps away — best for slow travel and a more local feel.

How do I book? Is there an online calendar?

Yes. Every casita, La Colina, and Hacienda La Cascada now has a live calendar synced from Google Calendar. Open any Reserve button to review the next 12 months, then submit the reservation form below without leaving the site. If you prefer, you can still reach us on WhatsApp for follow-up questions.

How does private yoga at Hacienda La Palma work?

Choose your preferred date and one of the morning or evening Costa Rica start times on the site. Our trained instructor based in India will call you directly at that chosen time for a 60-minute session tailored to your pace, energy, and goals. Every Casita is stocked with two yoga mats for the practice.

What activities can you arrange for us?

We can arrange guided hikes on Chirripó, coffee plantation tours, river rafting, horseback riding, Pacific sunset drives, private wine-and-dine evenings, a day at Hacienda La Cascada's waterfall, and more. Visit our Experiences page for the full list, then mention what interests you in your inquiry.

What is the weather like at 1,000 meters?

Our elevation puts us in what locals call the "Eternal Spring" zone — days averaging around 72°F (22°C), cool breezy evenings, and no need for air conditioning or heavy layers. You'll occasionally see mist rolling in from Chirripó in the mornings, which burns off by mid-day. It's genuinely pleasant year-round.

What makes Hacienda La Palma different from a larger resort?

We are not managed. We are not a brand. The owners — who grew your coffee, made your soap, and planned your day — are the people welcoming you. That's not a marketing line: it means when you ask for something, the answer comes from the person who knows the property best. It means your breakfast is made by someone who cares what it tastes like. It means your itinerary is shaped by people who actually know this region. Larger resorts offer scale. We offer something harder to find: genuine.
